During my time as artist in residence at SÍM Residency in Iceland I created a body of phantasmagorical super 8mm and 16mm experimental films. My current work explores the numinous experience, the mysterium tremendum et fascinans, coined by philosopher Rudolph Otto and based on the Latin word numen, meaning divine power. Author Michael Pollen described the mysterium tremendum as a ‘blinding unendurable mystery (whether of a God or some other Absolute) before which humans tremble in awe.’
I’m always yearning to capture a bittersweet ache, a longing for sensation that can only come through an experience of truly earth-shattering darkness.
